Pro-Grade Heat Trace Systems

Professional protection for pressure tanks and submersible pumps against extreme Northwestern Ontario winters.

Internal Heat Trace Cables

Essential for seasonal cottage services and buried lines where digging is impossible. These food-grade cables sit inside your pipe, preventing ice blockages and broken water lines while ensuring safe water treatment and flow in sub-zero NWO temperatures.

External Lines & Insulation

Optimal for jet pumps and lake intakes. We combine self-regulating cables with industrial insulation to maintain water quality testing standards and prevent freeze-ups. Our rural water done right approach keeps your water system active all winter long.

Heat Trace & Frozen Water Line FAQ

Why does my water line keep freezing?

Most repeat freeze-ups happen because the line is exposed to cold air, buried too shallow, poorly insulated, located in a cold crawlspace, or installed in an area with heavy wind exposure. The right solution may include heat trace, better insulation, an insulated chase, or changes to the way the line is protected.

Can heat trace be used on poly water line?

Yes, heat trace can often be used with poly water line, but the correct product and installation method matter. The heat trace must be suitable for the pipe, location, and application. Potable water lines require extra care, especially if the heat trace is installed inside the pipe.

Can heat trace go inside a water line?

Some heat trace products are designed for internal potable water line use. These systems require proper fittings, sealing, electrical protection, and manufacturer-approved installation methods. Not every cable is safe or suitable for inside-pipe use.

Is insulation enough to stop a water line from freezing?

Sometimes, but not always. Insulation slows heat loss, but it does not create heat. In severe cold, exposed or poorly protected lines may still freeze unless heat trace or another protection method is added.

What is the best way to protect an exposed water line?

The best setup depends on the pipe location, length, exposure, and use. A strong solution may include heat trace, pipe insulation, weather-resistant wrap, protection from wind, and possibly an insulated chase around the pipe.

Do you service camps and cottages?

Yes. Superior Water & Wells works on rural homes, camps, cottages, lakefront properties, and private well systems around Thunder Bay and surrounding rural communities.

Can a frozen water line damage my pump?

Yes. A frozen or blocked water line can cause the pump to run against a restriction, short-cycle, lose pressure, or create strain on the system. That is why it is important to check the pump, pressure tank, pressure switch, and water line together.

Do you only thaw frozen lines, or do you prevent them too?

We focus on both. Thawing or restoring water is only part of the job. The better long-term solution is identifying why the line froze and building a plan to reduce the chance of it happening again.
